Exam Preparation
CT
For all exams, you should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. Metal objects may interfere with the quality of the images, so please avoid clothing that has zippers, snaps or clasps. Please let us know in advance if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant.
For exams requiring fasting, medications can be taken with a small glass of water.
Common CT Procedures
Abdomen and Pelvis: Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your exam.
Brain, Chest, Extremity/Joint and Neck: Preferably nothing to eat 4 hours prior.
Lumbar: No barium in the abdominal region.
Contrast Procedures
Patients older than 50 receiving I.V. contrast will need to have results of a BUN and creatinine blood test that has been drawn within 14 days of the exam.
If you are taking the drug Glucophage, Glucovance, Adavandamet or Metformin for diabetes, please do not take this medication the day of the exam and 48 hours following the exam.
If you have any history of a reaction to Iodine or any contrast material, please contact Utah Imaging at least 3 days prior to your exam.
MRI
For all exams, you should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. Metal objects may interfere with the quality of the images, so please avoid clothing that has zippers, snaps or clasps. Please let us know in advance if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant.
It is preferred on abdominal MRI and MRCP that you have nothing to eat or drink 3 hours prior to your exam. The remaining MRI procedures do not require any restrictions on food or drink.
If you are claustrophobic, please have your physician prescribe a mild sedative to take prior to your exam.
Nucelar Medicine
For all exams, you should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. Please let us know in advance if you are diabetic, currently breastfeeding, or if there is a possibility that you may be pregnant.
Common NM Procedures
Gastric Emptying, Hepatobiliary and Hida Scans: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your exam. No barium in the abdominal region. If you are diabetic, please notify the tech for special instructions.
Thyroid Scans and Uptake: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your exam. Six weeks prior to your study, you should be off any thyroid hormones.
Brain, Bone and Renal: No special preparation required
Some procedures in Nuclear Medicine require a specific diet and/or a more detailed preparation than given above. If you have any questions or concerns about the preparation for your procedure please contact the appropriate facility and ask to speak to a Nuclear Medicine technologist.
Ultrasound
For all exams, you should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing.
Common Ultrasound Procedures
Abdomen, Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your exam if in the morning. For afternoon exams, nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior.
OB and Pelvic: Drink 36 ounces of water one hour prior to your exam. Patients must arrive with a full bladder, do not empty your bladder after initial drinking.
Breast, Renal, Testicular and Thyroid: No special preparation required
Biopsy or Cyst Aspiration: No blood thinners or Aspirin for one week prior to your exam.
